  • Weekly Policing Update - St Ives District

    Alert message sent 03/04/2021 12:12:00

Information sent on behalf of Cambridgeshire Constabulary

Good Afternoon, St Ives District Members –

Here is our weekly summary of offences and incidents affecting your community, reported to police during the period 28th March to 2nd April. My apologies for the non-appearance of last week’s Policing Update – this was due to a combination of technical and other factors that conspired together.

London Road – A mountain bike was stolen from outside a house on London Road on Saturday afternoon, 27th March. (Ref 35/17974/21)

Stocksbridge Way – Two suspects in a Ford Transit van broke in through a padlocked gate to enter the compound of an industrial unit on Stocksbridge Way on Saturday afternoon, 27th March. After checking some scrap metal bins which were empty, they left the site and drove off. (Ref 35/18368/21)

St Ives – Neighbourhood officers arrested a 61-year-old woman in connection with racially inflammatory posters which had been put up in the town, and sending harassing letters, on Sunday 28th March. The woman has since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue. (Ref: Policing Huntingdonshire Facebook Page)

Stephenson Road – Thieves stole the catalytic converter from a Mercedes car left parked on Stephenson Road at around midnight on Tuesday night, 30th March. CCTV recorded the theft taking place. (Ref 35/18897/21)

Houghton Road – Intruders broke into the office of commercial premises on Houghton Road overnight on Thursday 1st / Friday 2nd April. Metal gates to the compound were forced open then patio doors to the building were smashed and an untidy search was carried out inside. However, nothing is thought to have been stolen. (Ref 35/19242/21)

Station Road – A shopper was the victim of a distraction theft on Friday afternoon, 2nd April. The victim was loading shopping into her car in a car-park on Station Road when she was distracted by a woman who approached and started asking about dental services in the town. When the woman left, the victim discovered that her bank card had gone from her purse. On checking with her bank, she discovered that the card had been used to make fraudulent purchases of several hundred pounds. (Ref 35/19295/21)

And Finally – Hoax Emergency Calls:

Two Ramsey teenagers were responsible for repeated hoax 999 calls to the Force Control Room this week, initially calls consisting of laughing and swearing down the phone, but finally making a call alleging that they had been chased by two persons with knives.

Police responded but also tracked the phone used to make the call. When officers arrived at the scene, the two suspects were located, one of whom was in possession of the phone. When challenged about the hoax calls, they appeared unconcerned about their actions or the police resources that they had needlessly tied up.

Hoax calls take police time away from people who really need their help. Just one minute can make all the difference in an emergency. Misusing the 999 system and using it for non-emergency matters to report crimes or emergencies that do not exist can cost lives. If you are found to be making a hoax call, you could be fined or even sent to prison.
