Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

    Hello Everyone

I hope you are all managing to stay safe during these rather trying time, 2020 has been a really difficult year.

We did have a meeting scheduled for 16th December 2020 which obviously we are not holding face to face but if enough of you would like a get together on Zoom then if enough of you get back to me to make it worthwhile I will set something up for you all.

One thing that can hold us together and help us get through is kindness. Kind actions lift our spirits, enhance relationships and benefit those around us. Kindness is a gift in both directions - let's share as much of it as we can. There are resources on the Ourwatch website to help us tackle loneliness which you might find helpful. In the meantime I am working on some quizzes for you to do online just for fun and I have attached the Do Good December calendar which is full of ideas to help you help others.

Two local police meetings with Sgt. Lugg  and local councillors have been held, and it has been agreed that these are useful and are expected to continue in the next year. The good news is that crime rates remain low for our area. Whittlesey Crime figures were 72 that was up 10 in September and then 70 which was down 2 in October much of this is anti-social behaviour – remember we are still a low crime area and compare favourably to other areas.

Drugs are a growing problem and the police are continuing to conduct targetted operations with significant success although these are not widely publicised in order to maintain their operation effectiveness. A good deal of effort has been directed towards supporting children who become involved, but it is a difficult task and heavily reliant on communities being aware and reporting suspicious activities.

Sgt. Lugg explained that there are a large number of fake emails circulating at the moment such as parking tickets, tv licences and many more there is an email address to report this too. The police do try to circulate information via ECOPS and police Facebook pages. Please encourage people to follow both. Any fake emails asking people to give money to government departments such as the DVLA, HMRC, TV Licensing or the police can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk which is a government site. Please try to encourage people to report, this is the only way we will be able to effectively reduce this problem.

I have recently been at a meeting with Kit Malthouse,  the Minister of State for Policing and Crime, who shared the five areas that the government will be encouraging the police to concentrate on in the coming months. These are burglary, car crime, robbery, murder and drugs. He is focussed on the need to prevent crime occurring in the first place and sees Neighbourhood Watch as an important part of helping to reduce crime and improve wellbeing in communities. He stressed the importance of local partnerships with the police. I am hopeful that the re-structuring of the Cambridgeshire Force will be helpful to us in this area and all indications are that the relationships between our local police and NW will continue to strengthen our partnership in the coming months. I have a meeting planned with Sgt Lugg in the early part of 2021 to discuss ways that we can work effectively with the new police deployments once the re-structuring is complete.

The police restructuring proposals are set out below - please do not take the proposals as definite as there are consultations to go through yet. It is expected that the initial consultations will be completed and the exact details will become clearer before the end of this year.

The proposed plans include the reduction and alignment of PCSOs to all neighbourhoods across the force, the removal of the community safety role and a change to the opening hours of enquiry offices across the force, which will all assist in saving £1.7 million in 2021/22.
    The planned changes will see:
    • The reduction of PCSOs from 80 to 40, but with a single role profile and improved alignment to their team and they will cover all 28 neighbourhoods in the county to deal with the issues that matter most to the local community.
    • The removal of the community safety team, resulting in the reduction of six community safety officer posts across the force
    • The delivery of public enquiry offices providing a seven day a week provision at Thorpe Wood and Parkside Police Stations
    • The closure of nine enquiry offices (NOT the police stations), with the implementation of a team of police officers to provide people in each local authority area with an appointment-based service to allow members of the public to make an appointment to speak to an officer. This will result in a reduction of enquiry officers from 17 to 11

This may seem negative but it is still a consultation and until that is concluded it is unwise to draw conclusions about the impact on Whittlesey at this stage. It could result in a more consistent deployment across the force area which would benefit areas that have missed out in the past.

    Kind Regards

    Robin
