Information sent on behalf of Cambridgeshire Constabulary

Good Afternoon, Earith and Needingworth District Members –

Earith – Police responded to a report of youths gathering on a regular basis at a recreation field in Earith, on Tuesday evening, 2nd March, in breach of Covid-19 regulations. A group was present as officers were arriving, however they split up and ran off before they could be spoken to. Meadow Drove, Earith – CCTV recorded pictures of a burglary that happened at an industrial unit on Meadow Drove at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday night, 2nd March. Intruders broke into a workshop and stole a large number of tools from inside before driving off. Investigations are continuing. (Ref 35/12410/21)

Earith Bridge – A lorry that broke down on Earith Bridge on Friday morning, 5th March, was found to have run out of fuel following the theft of its diesel the previous night. The driver discovered that the fuel cap had been tampered with and the diesel siphoned out of the tank, most likely whilst it was parked up for the night near March. (Ref 35/13005/21)

Meadow Lane, Earith – Police received a report of damage to a pumping station on Meadow Lane, thought to have happened overnight on Friday 5th / Saturday 6th March. One door to the building had reportedly been torn down. The water company were notified and asked to come and make the building secure. (Ref 35/13158/21)

And Finally – Warning of A ‘National Insurance Number’ Telephone Scam:

My thanks to an Ecops subscriber in Somersham with experience of this telephone scam, for drawing my attention to it.

Action Fraud, the UK Centre for cyber-crime and fraud reporting and investigation, issued an alert to the public after receiving over a thousand extra calls in one week about the scam.

Victims received an automated telephone call telling them that their ‘National Insurance Number had been compromised’ and in order to fix it and get a new number, they should press number 1 on their phone to be connected to a service agent.

However, the agent was in fact a criminal who pressured victims into giving their personal details, to be used in subsequent fraud.

Action Fraud advise that people remain vigilant and cautious of any calls suggesting that their National Insurance Number has been compromised. If you have any doubts, hang up the phone.
