    Alert message sent 20/01/2021 11:55:00

    Information sent on behalf of Cambridgeshire Constabulary

    Good Afternoon, St Ives District Members –

    Vaccination Scams – A Warning from the NHS:

    Criminals are using the Covid-19 vaccinations as a way to target the public by tricking them to hand over cash or financial details. They are sending convincing-looking text messages letting people know they are eligible for the vaccine or phoning people directly, pretending to be from the NHS or local pharmacy.

    People are warned to be alert to these scams:

    The NHS will -
    • NEVER ask for payment – the vaccine is free;

    • NEVER ask for your bank details;

    • NEVER arrive unannounced at your home to administer the vaccine;

    • NEVER ask you to prove your identity by sending copies of personal documents such as your passport.

    Be alert to:
    • Fake Text Messages;

    • Fake Phone Calls;

    • Fake web-sites;

    • Fake visitors calling in person.

    Now on with our weekly summary of offences and incidents affecting your community, reported to police during the period 13th to 19th January:

    Darwood Court – Wed 13th Jan, morning – Thieves stole two bicycles that had been left chained together in the porch of a house. (Ref 35/2421/21)

    Spinney Way – Wed 13th Jan, 7:20pm – An attempted robbery by a male in a grey hoodie who grabbed a person walking along an alleyway and demanded money. The victim pushed the suspect away and escaped safely. Under investigation. (Ref 35/2424/21)

    St Ives – Monday 18th Jan – An attempted fraud via a telephone scam. The victims received a phone call pretending to be from their bank’s fraud department saying that a person had been arrested in London who had their credit-card details. The fraudster then pretended to transfer the phone call to various police departments, before the victims became suspicious and ended the call.

    Police advised that the victims notify their bank of the incident, and also Action Fraud, the UK centre for reporting and investigating fraud and cyber crime. Officers also attended the victims’ home to provide advice and reassurance. (Ref CC-18012021-0199)

    Covid-19 Regulations – A Message from Cambridgeshire Constabulary:

    Across the County, police received 152 calls over the weekend relating to potential Covid breaches. Many of these related to large groups gathering in public spaces as well as inside people’s homes.

    Officers dealt with these calls whilst managing serious crimes including violent assaults, collisions, domestic abuse incidents and more.

    As ever, thank you to those who are sticking to the rules – but if you are one of those still breaching the regulations, please re-think and work with the police to help protect our fantastic communities from this virus.
