Enforcement activity at takeaway businesses in Ely and Soham

Dear Resident,

I wanted to let you know about some recent enforcement activity carried out at takeaway businesses in Ely and Soham as part of ongoing work to tackle illegal working and labour exploitation.

On 10 September, officers worked alongside Immigration Enforcement to visit three fast-food outlets and check the employment status of staff.

During the visits, two men were found to be working illegally at Soham Kebab and Pizza in Red Lion Square and were dealt with by Immigration Enforcement. Checks at Ely King, in New Barns Road, and Ely Kebab, in Market Street, found the businesses to be compliant. Advice was provided to business owners around employment contracts, minimum salary requirements and methods of payment.

This activity forms part of wider work taking place across Cambridgeshire to identify and disrupt labour exploitation and organised immigration crime. Illegal working can often be linked to the exploitation of vulnerable people, and we will continue to work with partner agencies to ensure businesses comply with the law and that those at risk are safeguarded.
